2013 International Seminar on Cantonese Opera in Memory of the Centenary of Madam Yam Kim Fai (1913-1989)

2013-01-12 - 2013-01-13

With the addition of Cantonese opera to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009,  the study of Cantonese opera has developed at a rapid pace and diversified directions. Research on individual opera artists is especially noteworthy. Many works have been published, especially on the study of Madam Yam Kim Fai. It is not an exaggeration to state that amongst all the opera artists, Madam Yam Kim Fai (1913-1989) has enjoyed a pride of place, as she has left us a beautiful and fascinating page in the history of Cantonese opera. The organization of the 2013 International Seminar on Cantonese Opera in Memory of the Centenary of Madam Yam Kim Fai (1913-1989) is therefore a response to times and a call to peers to participate.

In recent years, many lovers of  Cantonese opera are tirelessly engaged in the promotion and popularization of this traditional art by different means, such as collection of materials in relation to Cantonese opera, ascertaining of the artistic formula, and research on individual opera artists etc.  It is encouraging to see that all these endeavours are successful to a certain extent. It is also a strong proof that serious academic research and interchange of views is a significant way to promote Cantonese opera and to introduce this precious art form to the younger generation. The organization of the 2013 Seminar is an attempt to attain this goal.

This conference is organized by “Yam Kim Fai Research Project” (http://www.yamkimfai2009.net) and co-organized by several academic and cultural organizations, including HKIED.
