Abstract

In his food poetry, the late Hong Kong poet Leung Ping-kwan (梁秉鈞)not only shared his own appreciation of food but also gave space to reflect on its significance in the mundane and multilayered contexts. This talk will address the following questions: What pictures of food does the poet draw in his poetry? How do subject and object interact and what’s in between? How does this refer to space and place? What relation can be drawn to Hong Kong? What role does language and the medium of poetry play in these contexts?

About The Speaker

Peter Sommerfeld is currently a graduate student in China Studies (MA) at the Free university of Berlin, researching the culinary space in Leung Ping-kwan’s poetry. His research interests lie in cultural studies, food studies, comparative literature, visual studies, aesthetics and everyday life and the intersections in-between.
